May & June – Reading, Watching, Listening

Reading books, watching TV and listening to podcasts to me is all part of the job of being a writer. At least that’s what I tell myself when I’m hooked on a series and will do anything to binge watch it.

And word of mouth and reviews is the best way to spread the love of book, tv, podcast consumption. So, this is me, spreading the love.

What Am I Reading?

Making Friends Graphic Novel. My ten year old has opened my eyes to the world of graphic novels. There are so many cool ones out there and together we are finding out the who’s who of illustrators. I love that in an hour I can read a book she has read and then we can chat about it.

The Bus on Thursday. OMG I don’t know what to say about this book. It was equally funny, creepy and just weird. I loved it! I don’t think I have ever read anything like it. And the ending! I shut the book thinking, what the hell? I would love to know anyone else’s thoughts on this book.

Sunny Side Up. Another graphic novel find. This one delved into a story about a young girl who had an older brother who had a drug problem. It was done so well for this age group and while some stuff was over my daughter’s head it was just enough for us to have a conversation about what to do when someone you love is in trouble.

What Am I Watching?

The Letdown. I can’t…. I just….. There are no words for this brilliant show. I feel like I worked during the day just so I could get my reward of another episode (or two) at night. Writers Alison Bell and Sarah Scheller are so insightful into what it means to be a new mum and a new dad for that matter. I loved the character Jeremy who showed so beautifully how hard it is to support your partner when you don’t know what you are doing yourself.

What Am I Listening To?

The First Time Podcast. I don’t know how or where I stumbled across this podcast but I’m so glad I did. Kate Mildenhall and Katherine Collette follow Katherine’s journey as she becomes published for the first time and they interview other author’s about their first time. It is so insightful as each author reveals how they ‘made it’. I’m a bit addicted to this if I’m honest.

Anyone got any recommendations?

What Have I Been Doing?

Went to Moonta with family. It was pretty cold and with five kids sometimes it’s easier to stay in but we did venture to the Kadina Library and had breakfast at Taste the Yorke. The friendliest service you will ever find. Ever.

Went to a friend’s house to use her Thermomix (stocking up on lemon curd) and three weeks later I am the proud owner of a Thermomix. Yup, I’m a Thermomix person thanks to Gumtree. I promise I won’t post any recipes. Actually what am I saying I can’t promise anything, seriously I’m in love.

I attended South Australian Romance Authors meet up. This months theme was Pitching and Writing a Synopsis. Again, so much useful information from these generous ladies. The RWA conference is in full swing for August and I am so bummed I’m not going. Good luck everyone!

Slightly off track here but… I had a colonoscopy. Yeah, let’s get it out there people, no reason why we shouldn’t talk about bowels. It was routine, I have a family history of bowel cancer and I am in the forties club now so this shit happens (excuse the pun!). But seriously, bowel cancer claims a life every two hours in Australia. It’s true. And the thing is there are simple home screening tests we can all do to help prevention. Check the Jodi Lee foundation for more info. So check your bowels! And tell your friends! Yeah!

What’s coming up next month?

SALA – The very talented and might I add devilishly handsome artist Tim Eden is holding a SALA event at Nook Nosh on August 1st. If you are an Adelaidean then please do poke your head in.

10km run – Last year I ran a half marathon and this year I can barely run 3kms. But my sister, bless her, has got me motivated and signed us up for a 10km run in the Barossa. I’m looking forward to it… sort of.

Salisbury Writers Festival ( – I have never been before because something has always been on but this year I think it’s time for me to check it out.

Book week ( Anyone else still get excited about book week? I do. And dress up is huge in our house so I probably need to start preparing now.

Adelaide show ( Hey Hey! Who’s going?! I will be there with three kids and hopefully a blue ribbon in the gluten free chocolate cake competition. I really can’t explain why but it has always been on my bucket list to enter a cooking completion.

Camping at Melrose in the Flinders Ranges. Can. Not. Wait. So excited to go camping with some really good mates.

My birthday! Whoop! Whoop! I think the whoop whoop says it all.

Anyone got anything exciting coming up? Or even something not exciting coming up?

Drop me a line and let me know!
